VIRTUALITIES

Virtualities is a synthesizer project by Hans Holema.

Recently his fourth project ‘Layers of Existence’ has been published, and he is working on a 5th album

He started using synthesizers back in the 70’s – first lending an Arp Axxe from a friend. But as soon as Elektuur magazine published a DIY modular synthesizer (Formant – 1976), Hans started building that with a friend to be able to add synthesizer sounds to his music (so far limited to guitar that he started playing at age 8).

Working with Formant gave him a solid background for synthesizer music. When the personal computers came available, the Commodore 64 was the first machine he used to record midi and play recorded tracks on midi equipment, later switching to Atari ST to use with synths like the Yamaha DX7 polyphonic FM synthesizer and several 19 inch rack synthesizer modules.

Using computers for music has changed quite a lot over the years and nowadays they are used as full blown recording studios like the setup he uses (shown below), using plugin synthesizer software that can sound like modular synths or machines like Fairlight, Synclavier, Yamaha CS80 and many more….

As a matter of fact, he is also programming a line of synthesizer modules for Voltage Modular, based on the Formant called F-syn.
